Ero rimasto folgorato da “Chaos, Blood & War”, al momento primo ed unico lavoro pubblicato dai valorosi DeifieD, ottima band ellenica che ho avuto la fortuna di vedere in azione in quel di Atene. Da un po’ di tempo non avevo loro notizie, quindi quale occasione migliore per un’intervista? A rispondere alle mie domande ci hanno pensato il chitarrista Nikos ed il batterista Aris, regalandoci un viaggio attraverso passato, presente e futuro della band!

Ciao ragazzi!! E’ un onore ospitarvi sulle nostre pagine!!! Prima di parlare della band, vi va di raccontarci chi siete e cosa fate nella vita di tutti i giorni?
Nikos: Ciao! Sono un uomo comune che deve lavorare hahahahaha! Sono un giornalista, un reporter sportivo. E sono stato fortunato da ragazzino, perchè i miei genitori insistettero affinchè imparassi a suonare un strumento: scelsi la chitarra e, all’epoca, un mio amico americano mi fece avere la mia prima cassetta degli Stryper, poi ho comprato “Seventh Son”!
Aris: Grazie a voi per l’ospitalità! Va tutto alla grande e siamo in un periodo molto proficuo per i DeifieD. A parte questo, ognuno di noi ha il suo lavoro quotidiano, non in relazione con l’industria musicale. Attualmente, solo il nostro cantante Dimitris lavora come vocal tutor. Viviamo tutti ad Atene e, personalmente, ho iniziato con le percussioni 19 anni fa, quando decisi di suonare qualcosa che avesse a che fare con la sezione ritmica ed il basso sembrava così simile ad una chitarra! Amo supportare i miei più cari amici coinvolti nella musica metal ed aiutarli attivamente a trovare i fondi per pubblicare i loro album, organizzare una sala prove e, naturalmente, finanziare le release dei DeifieD ed il merchandise, siccome abbiamo deciso di essere indipendenti.
Nikos, tu hai fondato la band a settembre 2012 insieme al batterista Aris. Vuoi raccontarci i motivi che vi spinsero a mettere in piedi la band? Come mai sceglieste di chiamare la band Deified?
N: Nel periodo 2011-12 volevo suonare ancora metal, dopo più di dieci anni sulla scena. Feci molte audizioni ma, alla fine, decisi di cercare le persone per formare una band. Un amico comune fece incontrare me ed Aris e, da allora, siamo andati avanti insieme.
Per quanto riguarda il nome, ne stavamo cercando uno che potesse andare bene con l’orientamento epico che volevamo dare alla band. Stavo cercando idee in rete e mi sono imbattuto nel verbo “to deify” (divinizzare, N.d.R.). Quindi divenne DeifieD.
Della prima incarnazione della band fa parte anche il bassista Makis Petritsis, è corretto? Inoltre, a pochi mesi dalla nascita avete fatto il vostro esordio live al “7Sins” di Atene come opening act di Blind Justice, Heathendom ed Erase: quali altri musicisti completarono la line-up dei Deified? Quali ricordi conservate di quel concerto?
A: Si, puoi dire che Makis è stato parte della prima incarnazione della band. Ci conoscevamo bene già prima dei DeifieD avendo suonato insieme nei Wheelrunner, una heavy-rock metal band attiva nel periodo 2000-2012: è stato lui a presentarmi a Nick. In merito al nostro primo show, quello è stato una pietra miliare per i DeifieD: eravamo tutti così emozionati ed eccitati di poter suonare dal vivo in così poco tempo dalla nascita della band, con il cantante Mike Livas che in quel periodo era appena entrato nel gruppo. C’erano dei rischi essendo una band formata da poco, ma a giudicare dalle reazioni dopo il live eravamo andati molto bene! Quell’esibizione è stata molto importante per farci entrare nella scena heavy metal!
N: Makis è stato anche uno dei membri fondatori. Al nostro primo show avevamo Spyros Dimopoulos alla chitarra e Mike Livas – che aveva preso il posto di Michalis Apostolakis – alle vocals. Lo show era stato buono e ricordo che avevamo lasciato una buona prima impressione. Avevamo suonato le tre canzoni dell’EP “Chaos, Blood & War” nella loro prima versione.. una rarità, ahahahah!
A settembre 2013 iniziate a lavorare al vostro EP “Chaos, Blood & War”, che si compone di tre brani più una versione “radio edit” dell’opener “Eyes Of Fire”. Volete raccontarci come sono nati questi tre brani? I testi sono legati alla mitologia greca, giusto?
N: Le tre canzoni nascono da idee mie e ci abbiamo lavorato molto in studio. Ogni brano ha avuto un lungo e a volte difficile “percorso” prima di arrivare alla versione finale che poi è stata registrata. Ognuno di noi ha fatto un lavoro straordinario su quelle idee per farle diventare le canzoni che abbiamo registrato.
A: Sì, il modo in cui abbiamo lavorato alle canzoni per l’EP è stato lavorare insieme sui riffs iniziali che Nikos aveva portato in studio e da lì siamo partiti. Normalmente il mio ruolo, oltre alla sezione ritmica, è quello di strutturare ed orchestrare le canzoni, facendo in modo che tutti possano dare il loro contributo. Naturalmente, siamo stati molto fortunati dato che, praticamente senza rendercene conto, abbiamo saputo affrontare e gestire le influenze di tutti i membri! Il risultato è stato heavy metal! Qualcosa di familiare da ascoltare ma, contemporaneamente, fresco. Il fattore più importante è che ogni membro è stato contento di ogni singola nota dell’EP, senza alcun compromesso: ora puoi capire perchè ci abbiamo lavorato così tanto tempo!
Riguardo ai testi, sono principalmente ispirati alla mitologia ellenica. “Diomedes” parla del leggendario personaggio della mitologia greca, mentre “Chaos Blood & War” descrive una tipica ed epica scena di guerra e confronto. “Eyes Of Fire” non è direttamente comparabile alle altre due canzoni: descrive, sempre in chiave epica, il fuoco che poche persone hanno nella loro anima e come affrontano le loro battaglie personali legate a questioni relative alla loro esistenza.
Ho molto apprezzato le atmosfere ed il pathos che emergono dai brani: in questo vi aiuta anche l’ottima registrazione di “Chaos, Blood & War”, che viene lavorato ai “Power Studio” di Atene con George Stratakis. Quanto sono durate e come si sono svolte le fasi di registrazione dell’EP? Avete incontrato delle difficoltà o tutto è filato liscio?
N: Registrare e produrre l’EP è stato un lungo processo. George ha lavorato sia come ingegnere del suono che come produttore: ci ha aiutato molto e in ogni modo grazie alla sua esperienza ed abbiamo una visione comune della musica. La più grande difficoltà è stata finanziare l’EP, insieme alla ricerca del cantante.
A: Attualmente, George è un membro dei DeifieD e ci ha aiutato molto in tutte le fasi di lavoro dell’EP. L’intero processo ha richiesto almeno due anni dal momento in cui abbiamo deciso di partire fino all’uscita dell’EP. Siamo stati aiutati anche da altri amici della band, che hanno contribuito in modo volontario secondo le loro possibilità ( ad esempio, l’artwork è opera di Filippou Vasilis e delle fotografie si è occupato Ioannis Fotou).
Le vocals delle canzoni sono state registrate da Tassos Krokodilos (Spitfire, Blind Justice e molti altri): come siete arrivati a lui? Secondo voi, cosa ha aggiunto la sua performance ai brani?
N: Makis sapeva che Tassos sarebbe venuto a cantare per la pre-produzione dei brani e che eravamo alla ricerca di un cantante. Ma Tassos – dopo aver ascoltato le canzoni – ci disse che gli sarebbe piaciuto essere lui a cantare sui brani dell’EP. Penso che abbia portato freschezza, potenza e sfrontatezza. Lui sa come ottenere un sound epico, poetico e potente: ha fatto un gran lavoro!
A: Lo stile dei DeifieD è in linea con le influenze metal di Tassos ed è stato davvero facile spiegargli ed ottenere quello che avevamo in mente per le canzoni. E’ stato un processo facile e divertente, sia per Tassos che per la band e lo puoi sentire dal risultato ottenuto sull’EP: Tassos ha contribuito a creare quello stile epico e leggendario richiesto attraverso un’intensa passione. Per me la sua voce ha i colori adatti per fare raggiungere questi risultati. Inoltre, ci siamo trovati così bene che abbiamo anche prolungato la nostra collaborazione.
La release ufficiale dell’EP avviene a febbraio 2015, è autoprodotto ed ha una tiratura di 300 copie. Come è stato accolto dai fans e dagli addetti ai lavori? Quali responsi avete raccolto al di fuori della Grecia?
N: Attualmente sono 500 copie, ed abbiamo ricevuto buone recensioni sia dalla Grecia che al di fuori.
A tre anni di distanza dall’uscita, c’è qualche cosa che cambiereste o fareste in un altro modo su “Chaos, Blood & War”?
N: Preferisco pensare a questo EP come ad un primo figlio dalla nascita travagliata. Non penso che vorrei cambiare qualcosa, ma so che dobbiamo fare migliorie sul nostro prossimo progetto.
A: E’ una pietra miliare per i DefieD e da allora siamo cresciuti. “Chaos Blood & War” riflette ciò che erano i DeifieD, incluse le nostre caratterische di quel periodo, pertanto non vorremmo mancare di rispetto a noi stessi cambiando qualcosa dell’EP. Quello che probabilmente cambieremo è che, per la prossima release, cercheremo di essere più efficienti, utilizzando l’esperienza che abbiamo fatto con “Chaos Blood & War”. Siamo cresciuti da allora e, se devo dirti la verità, non so come questo si rifletterà sulla nostra musica, ma cercheremo di mantenere al meglio il sound e le caratteristiche dei DeifieD.
Personalmente il vostro EP mi è piaciuto un sacco! Nella recensione che ho scritto a suo tempo, indicavo la vostra musica come “poderoso heavy metal a tinte epiche, le cui influenze possono rimandare ai Maiden più evocativi e agli Helloween per alcuni spunti decisamente power – per certi aspetti mi hanno ricordato gli Atria Mortis, altra ottima band ellenica – ed in cui ritroviamo elementi epici provenienti da oltreoceano, come una venatura di oscurità alla Cirith Ungol ed un’eleganza melodica dal sapore Warlord”. Quanto vi ritrovate in questa descrizione? Quali sono le vostre influenze come musicisti?
N: Non conosco i Cirith Ungol! Sicuramente conosco i Warlord e, naturalmente, Maiden ed Helloween, ma anche Judas Priest ed Iced Earth. Sono le classiche influenze di molte band. Io penso che noi abbiamo una miscela di molti altri elementi nella nostra musica, cerchiamo di suonare freschi anche se, al giorno d’oggi, non è facile. Ci piace pensare di aver segnato una rotta che tutti coloro che hanno ascoltato il nostro primo EP potranno ritrovare nelle nostre nuove produzioni, capendo che stanno ascoltando i DeifieD. Rappresenta anche una sfida.
A: Wow! Descrizione davvero epica! Mi piace! Questo è quello che volevo per I DeifieD! Che venissero usate più di due bands e di due generi per descrivere la nostra musica, ahahah! Questo significa molto! La mia opinione personale è che sei andato molto vicino a come la descriverei! Il punto è che devi tenere le radici heavy metal degli Iron Maiden, arricchirle da un sound US power ed aggiungere alcune idee alla Warlord (specialmente in termini di tempi e melodie di chitarra) e completare il tutto con tonalità e testi epici. Nicko Mc Brain, Warlord, Iced Earth e Rotting Christ sono alcune delle mie influenze come tu hai capito…
Il 2015 vi vede suonare dal vivo in diversi festival al fianco di band come Power Crue, Ruthless Steel, Angelo Perlepes’ Mystery e Wisdom, tra gli altri. Quanto è importante suonare dal vivo per una band come i Deified? Più in generale, è difficile a trovare le occasioni per portare la vostra musica on stage?
N: Amiamo stare su un palco e siamo stati abbastanza fortunati da poter dividere lo stage con molte grandi band elleniche, speriamo di poterlo fare ancora. Per me, l’essenza di stare in una band è suonare dal vivo e sentire l’energia ed il supporto.
A: Ecco perchè per noi è al primo posto. Specialmente per le metal bands, stare on stage e connettersi con i fans e la comunità rappresenta tutto. Suonare metal è essere se stessi, divertirsi con l’arte della musica, connettersi con le persone, essere creativi, ecc., diversamente da altri generi musicali… Questo è ciò che rende questo tipo di musica speciale e classica nel tempo.
Lo stesso anno c’è una piccola rivoluzione nella band: arrivano il cantante Dimitris Giannakopoulos ed il chitarrista Manos “Dime” Karahalios, il bassista Makis lascia la band ed al suo posto arriva Panagiotis “Savage” Zouvelos. Potete raccontarci cosa successe in quei mesi?
N: Il periodo dopo la release dell’EP è stato davvero complicato, ma siamo riusciti a recuperare. Abbiamo incontrato Dimitris, che già ci conosceva, e dopo molte parole fu d’accordo nell’entrare nella band. Quello è stato un momento davvero molto importante, dato che lui non è solo un bravo cantante, è anche una grande persona ed ha dato differenti aspetti ai nuovi brani. Manos è un amico di Dimitris, un grande chitarrista che ha capito lo spirito della band e con cui si è creata una buona chimica.
Al momento in cui scrivo, Panagiotis Zouvelos ha lasciato la band. Come procedono le ricerche del nuovo bassista?
A: Questa è un’esclusiva per te! Siamo lieti di annunciare attraverso questa intervista che Villy Pirris è il nostro nuovo bassista! Villy ha una grande esperienza e da poco è entrato a far parte della band! Siamo davvero onorati ed eccitati di averlo a bordo e siamo impazienti di prendere il meglio da lui! Come batterista, lavorare con Villy è una grande sorpresa, abbiamo lo stesso modo di intendere la sezione ritmica, lui sarà capace di fare la differenza!
E per quanto riguarda della nuova musica cosa potete dirci? State lavorando a nuovi brani? Quali sono i progetti futuri dei Deified?
N: Abbiamo nuovo materiale su cui stiamo lavorando. E stiamo lavorando alla vecchia maniera, abbiamo composto quasi la maggior parte della nostra musica in studio, durante le prove, basandoci sulle idee che abbiamo scritto a casa.Questo rende complicato e difficoltoso – a volte – l’essere produttivi come vorremmo.
A: Stiamo componendo nello stesso processo descritto in precedenza, puoi ascoltare il nuovo materiale attraverso il nostro canale. Recentemente, abbiamo suonato ad Atene tre nuovi brani che non abbiamo ancora registrato (qui https://youtu.be/ey8dZjFkrYM trovate il brano “Queen Of The Underworld”). Attualmente ci stiamo concentrando sulla composizione di nuovi brani per il full-length album, al momento questa è la nostra priorità. Abbiamo in programma di concludere i nuovi brani dopo l’estate, in modo da poter iniziare a registrarli. L’ingresso di Villy nei DeifieD ci ha permesso di suonare qualche altro live show durante l’estate, senza lasciare indietro i lavori sul nuovo album.
Questa domanda la faccio sempre quando mi trovo a parlare con ragazzi greci: come la mia Italia, la Grecia ha un sacco di ottime bands che fanno una gran fatica ad uscire dall’underground. Secondo voi, quali sono i motivi di questa difficoltà nell’affermarsi ad un pubblico più ampio?
N: Ci sono heavy metal maniacs in tutto il mondo, ma le cose sono cambiate negli ultimi decenni. Non ci sono soldi per promuovere nuovi lavori, anche se Internet fornisce tutti i mezzi ad una band per raggiungere i suoi obiettivi. Ci sono così tante band che, soprattutto il pubblico più giovane, non ha il tempo o anche la volontà di scoprirle. E a volte i metal fan preferiscono avere.. una birra in più invece di sostenere una band acquistandone il CD o la t-shirt, o preferiscono assistere a spettacoli di cover band piuttosto che ascoltare musica originale delle band locali.
A: È chiaro che, per molte ragioni, questa musica non è più supportata dall’industria musicale. Era una tendenza negli anni ’70-’90 ed ora è finito in una hall of fame. Un genere nella hall of fame significa non offrire spazio a nuove band dal momento che non c’è budget da investire, e sfrutta le band leggendarie fino alla loro morte (vedi Lemmy, le varie reunion, etc.). Questo è successo perché l’industria musicale ha scoperto che è meglio creare generi con fan bases molto più vaste (ad esempio la cultura pop) per controllarli e “mungerli come vacche” più facilmente. Un motivo secondario è l’accesso alla tecnologia e agli strumenti che oggi consentono a tutti di creare musica. Pertanto, è difficile con l’attuale mentalità del “consumo” (ovvero ottenere quantità e non qualità) far apprezzare nuove idee e trends.
Una mia curiosità: Nikos, sbaglio o ti occupi di sport su una emittente radiotelevisiva? Che ne pensi dei recenti fatti che, ancora una volta, hanno portato il calcio greco a fermarsi?
N: Il calcio greco è in uno stato di profonda depressione come tutto il Paese. La corruzione è la caratteristica principale di questo sport che manca di qualità e di grandi giocatori e, per quanto mi piaccia guardare la Champions League e le squadre europee di alto livello, preferisco non seguire da vicino il calcio greco. Mi ritengo fortunato di poter scrivere dei cosiddetti sport “minori” in Grecia come pallamano, atletica, pallavolo e pallanuoto. Questi sport sembrano più “innocenti”, anche se ci sono molti problemi dopo i Giochi Olimpici di Atene nel 2004: preferisco guardare le partite della NFL ed il tennis che perdere due ore per una partita della massima lega greca.
Ok ragazzi, ora siamo arrivati alla fine. Come di consueto, le ultime parole sono vostre, chiudete come meglio credete questa intervista! Da parte mia vi ringrazio di cuore, per la vostra musica e per la disponibilità!

Hi guys!! Is an honor for us to host you on our pages!! Before to speak about the band, I would like to ask you how are you and, please, introduce yourself in everyday life to our readers: we would like to know you a little better!
N: Hi! As an ordinary man I have to work, hahahahaha! I’m journalist, a sports reporter. And I’m lucky that when I was a little boy my parents insisted to learn to play an instrument and I choose the guitar and at that time a friend from the US gave me my first tapes of Stryper and I bought “Seventh Son”!
A: Thank you for hosting us! We are doing great, and we are actually in a very fruitful period for DeifieD. Apart from that, we do have our everyday jobs, which is also not related to music industry. Actually, only Dimitris, our lead singer, is also a vocal tutor. We all live in Athens. Personally, I started playing percussion 19 years ago, when I decided to play something related to the rhythm section and bass seemed very similar to guitar! I love to support my close friends who are into metal music and actively help the through financing of underground album releases, set up a rehearsal studio and of course finance the release of DeifieD and the merchandise, since we decided to go independent.
Nikos, you founded Deifed in september 2012 with the drummer Aris. Do you want to tell us about the reasons why you started the band? I can guess, why did you choose Deified like band’s name?
N: In 2011-12 I wanted to get beasy again playing metal, after more than ten years of the scene. I went to some auditions, but finally I decided to look for members to form a band. And from a common friend Aris and I met and kept going since then.
As we were looking for a name to suit the epic oriantation we wanted for the band, I was searching for ideas on the net and I crossed with the verbe “to deify”. So it became DeifieD.
The bass player Makis Petritsis is part of the first incarnation of the band, correct? Furthermore, few months after the formation, Deified had made their live debut at “7Sins” in Athens, like opening act for Blind Justice, Heathendom and Erase: which other musicians complete the Deified’s lineup? What memories preserved about that show?
A: Yes, you can say that Makis was part of the first incarnation of the band. We knew each other well before DeifieD, as we were playing together in Wheelrunner, a heavy-rock metal band that was active during the 2000 – 2012 period. He was the one actually that approached me and introduced me with Nick. Regarding our first show, this was a milestone for DeifieD. We were all so overwhelmed and excited to go live in a such a short period after founding the band, while the singer at that time had just entered the band (Mike Livas). There were some risks as a newly formed band, which judging from the aftermath of the live we handled them well! It was very important since our participation in that live placed us on the scene of the heavy metal.
N: Makis was also one of the founding members. At that first show Spyros Dimopoulos was on the lead guitars and Mike Livas (he had replaced Michalis Apostolakis) on vocals. About the show, it was a good one and I remember that we made a good first impression. We played the 3 songs from the “Chaos Blood n War”EP in their first edition. Rare staff, hahahaha!
In September 2013, you start working on “Chaos, Blood & War”: the EP contains three songs plus the “radio edit” of the opener “Eyes Of Fire”. Do you want to tell us about the creation of these three songs? What about the lyrics of the songs.. they speaks of Greek mythology, right?
N: All three songs were ideas I had and we worked them mostly in the studio. All the songs had to make a long and sometimes difficult “journey”to get to the final edition and start the recordings. Everybody worked overtime for these ideas to become the songs we recorded.
A: Yes, the way we compiled the songs for this EP is by working all together some initial riffs that Nikos brings in the studio and then we take it from there together. Usually my role, apart from the rhythm section, is to structure and orchestrate the songs. By doing that there is room for everyone to contribute. Of course, we were very lucky on that, since in that way (without realizing it necessarily) we managed to cope and handle the influences of every member! The result was simply heavy metal! Something familiar to hear, but at the same time fresh. The most important factor here is that everyone was pleased with every single note include in these tracks and no one compromised. Now you see why it took us so long!
In terms of lyrics indeed these are inspired mainly from the Hellenic Mythology. Diomedes talks about the legendary character of the Greek Mythology, whereas Chaos Blood & War describes a typical scene of epic war & confrontation. Eyes of Fire is not that straightforward compared to the other 2 tracks. It describes in an Epic manner the fire in their soul that few people have and how they handle their personal battles in matters relating to their existence.
I have really appreciated the epic atmospheres and the pathos that emerge from the songs: it also helps you the good quality of recording, in my opinion. “Chaos, Blood & War” was processing at “Power Studio” in Athens by George Stratakis: how long did it take and how there were the various working phases of the EP? Have you had some difficulties or did everything go all right?
N: It was a long process for us to record and produce the EP. George acted both as an sound engineer and producer and he helped a lot all the way as he had the experience and shared our vision. The biggest difficulty was financing the EP along with finding a singer.
A: George is a member of DeifieD actually and he helped a lot in all the stages of the EP. The whole process took almost 2 years from the moment we decided to go for the EP until it was issued. There were other friends of the band that volunteered in their own way (i.e. artwork by Filippou Vasilis and photoshooting by Ioannis Fotou).
Tassos Krokodilos (Spitfire, Blind Justice and many other) has sung on the songs: how did you get to him? In your opinion, what has added the performance of Tassos at your songs?
N: Makis knew Tassos who came to sing for the preproduction of the EP as we were still looking for a singer. But Tassos – after listening to the songs – he told us he would like to be the one to sing on the EP. I think he brought freshness, power and boldness. He knew how to sound epic, lyrical and powerful. He did a great job.
A: The style of DeifieD was familiar to the influences and metal school of Tassos and so it was easy for us to explain to him and extract what we had in mind for the performance of the songs. It was an easy and enjoyable process for both Tassos and the band. You can feel this from the outcome of the EP, in which Tassos contributed to deliver the legendary – epic style required by exercising the amount of passion required. For me he also has the appropriate color in his voice to do so. Furthermore, the success of this collaboration resulted to extent our cooperation.
The official release of “Chaos, Blood & War” was in february 2015: the EP was self-produced in 300 copies. What was the feedbacks from fans and critics inside and outside Greece?
N: They were 500 copies actually. We had many good reviews in Greece and from abroad.
Three years later the release of the EP, is there anything that you would change or that you would do in another way on “Chaos, Blood & War”?
N: I’d like to think of this EP as the first offspring of a difficult birth. I don’t think I would like to change something. But I know that we have to do better on our next project.
A: It is a milestone release for DeifieD and since then we have evolved. Chaos Blood & War reflects the DeifieD era at that time, including our characters back then. Therefore, we would never disrespect that by changing anything to the EP. What we will probably change is they way we to be more efficient in the next release, by utilizing our experience from the EP. We have evolved since then and to tell you the truth I do not know how this will be reflected in our music in the next release. We try to maintain the DeifieD characteristics and sounds in the ne compositions as well.
Personally, I had appreciated so much your EP! In my review, I had described your music like “mighty heavy metal with epic shades, whose influences can remember the most evocative Iron Maiden and Helloween for few things power-oriented – in some ways, they have remembered me Atria Mortis, another great hellenic band – with epic metal elements from Usa, like a little bit of darkness in vein of Cirith Ungol and a melodic grace of Warlord”. What do you think about this description? Which are your influences as musicians?
N: I don’t know about Cirith Ungol! Warlord most definitely and of course Maiden and Helloween. But also Judas Priest and Iced Earth. But those are classic influences of most bands. I think that we mix a lot of other elements in our music and we are trying to sound fresh which is not easy in our days. We like to think that we have set a course that anyone who has listened our first EP will listen to new staff and understand that he’s listening to DeifieD. Which is also a challenge.
A: Wow! That description is so Epic! I love it! That is what I wanted for DeifieD! To use more than 2 bands and 2 genres to describe the music! Hahaha! This means a lot! In my personal opinion you are really close to what I would describe as well! The bottom line is you keep the heavy metal roots of Iron Maiden, enrich with US power sound, add a few mind-fucking ideas like Warlord (especially in terms of tempos and guitar melodies) and wrap all this with Epic lyrics and tunes. Nicko Mc Brain, Warlord, Iced Earth, Rotting Christ are some of my influences as you have already understood…
In 2015, you has played live in few festival with band like Power Crue, Ruthless Steel, Angelo Perlepes’ Mystery and Wisdom, among others. How much is important to play live shows for a band like Deified?
N: We love to be on stage and we are lucky enough to share the stage with many great Greek bands and we hope will keep on doing it. For me is the essence of being in a band to be able to play live shows and feel the energy and the support.
A: This is why we do it in the first place. Especially for metal bands being on stage and connecting with fans and the community is the what is all about. Playing metal is about being yourself, enjoying the art of music, connecting with people, being creative etc., unlike other music genres… This is what makes this kind of music special and classic in time.
In the same year there was a little revolution in the lineup: the singer Dimitris Giannakopoulos and the guitarist Manos “Dime” Karahalios joins Deified, Makis Petritsis left the band and Panagiotis “Savage” Zouvelos was the new bass player. Can you tell us what happened in that months?
N: The period after the release of the EP was complicated. But we managed to recover. We met with Dimitris, he was familiar with our work, and after a lot of talking he agreed to join the band. And that was a very important moment since he is not only a good singer, but also a great guy and gives to the new songs different aspects. Manos was a friend of Dimitris, a great guitarist who understood the spirit of the band and we have good chemistry.
While I’m writing these questions, Panagiotis Zouvelos has left the band. How about the search of the new bass player?
A: Here is an exclusivity for you! We are proud to announce through this interview that Villy Pirris is the new bass player of DeifieD! Villy has great experience and just joined forces with us! We are very honored and excited to have him on board and looking to forward to make the most out of him! As a drummer working with Villy, is quite of a great surprise for me, since he has the same mindset with me in the rhythm section, great influences and therefore he will be able to make the difference!
What about new music from Deified? Do you have new songs? And what are the future plans of Deified?
N: We have new material on which we are working. We work in an old school way, we almost compose most of our music in the studio, during rehearsals, based on ideas we write at home. That makes it complicated and difficult – sometimes – to be as productive as we would like to be.
A: We composing in the same process as described earlier. You have to check the new material in our channel in DeifieD. We played 3 unrecorded songs recently in Athens (check https://youtu.be/ey8dZjFkrYM namely “Queen of the Underworld”). Currently we are focusing on composing new tracks for the full-length album. This is our priority for the time being. We plan to have conclude on the new tracks after the summer so we can start recording them. Villy joining DeifieD, will now enable us to play a few more live shows during the summer, without leaving behind the new album.
I always do this question when I talk with Greek guys: as Italy, Greece has a lot of great bands who are struggling to get out from underground. In your opinion, what are the reasons for this difficulty in affirming to a wider audience?
N: There is heavy metal maniacs all over the world. But things have changed the last decades. There are no money to promote new works although the internet provides all the means for a band to achieve its goals. But there are so many bands that especially the younger audience don’t have the time or even the will to check. And sometimes metal fans prefer to have one more… beer than supporting a band by buying a CD or a t-shirt and they prefer to attend cover bands shows than listening to original music from the local bands.
A: It is clear that for many reasons this music is no longer supported by the music industry. It was a trend during the 70’s – 90’s era and now it has gone to the hall of fame. A genre being in the hall of fame means there is no room for new bands, since there is no budget to spend, and we will exploit the legendary bands till they die (see Lemmy, reunions etc.). This happened because the music industry found out it is better to make genres with much larger fan bases (i.e. pop culture) to control them and “cash cow” them more easily. A side reason is the access of technology and tools that nowadays enable everyone to make music and have access to it. Therefore, it is difficult with the current “consumption” mentality (which is to get quantity not quality) to appreciate new ideas and trends.
This is just as curiosity: Nikos, do you work for a sporting broadcasting station, right? What do you think about the recent events that, once more, have stopped the Greek football?
N: Greek football is in deep depression like the rest of the country. Corruption is the main characteristic of the sport which lacks of quality and great players. And as much I like to watch Champions League and top level European teams, I prefer not to check on closely the Greek football. I’m lucky to write about the so called in Greece “minor” sports like handball, athletics, volley, water polo. Those sports seem more “innocent” although there are many problems after the Olympic Games of Athens back in 2004. I prefer to watch NFL games and tennis than spend two hours for a major Greek league game.
